The Meehl Cryostat is a user facility where DC and RF measurements can be performed at mK temperatures. The cryostat was donated by David W. Meehl in memory of his father, James R. Meehl. The facility emphasizes collaborative projects that enhance the quantum science efforts at Cornell.
- Location: Clark Hall B-G14.
- Manager: Rachael Cohn, rc784@cornell.edu, Clark Hall B-G06.
Rules
- One user per research group will be trained.
- Instrument time will be scheduled in weekly blocks.
After using the cryostat, you will have to wait 1 month before scheduling again, unless there is no one else in the queue. - Samples must be prepared ahead of time.
- Insert sample package into CAD to show that it will fit, or stop by while the probe is warm (Tuesday mornings) to check if your sample package fits.
- Ensure your sample will fit in the probe at least a week before your scheduled instrument time.
- You must have a complete plan for experiments in advance of instrument time submitted to Rachael.
- Will you need the magnet? If so, what range of fields do you need?
- Do you have DC samples, RF samples, or both?
- What are your general research goals?
- What measurement instrumentation do you plan to bring?
- Rachael will load and unload the probe for you. Samples will be unloaded on Tuesday mornings and new samples will be loaded on Tuesday afternoons. Please coordinate specific times with Rachael.
- No food or drink inside the lab.
- If you are unsure of anything, please ask.
- Look for Rachael in her office, Clark B-G06 (right down the hall from the cryostat).
- If she’s not in the office, you can reach her at rc784@cornell.edu or, if urgent, (610) 551-7772.
Training
Please email Rachael Cohn (rc784@cornell.edu) to schedule a training session. The subject of the email should read “Cryostat Training – Group Name.”
Include the following information.
- Your name, your PI’s name, and any collaborator’s names.
- The general research goals of your research and how the Meehl cryostat fits in.
- The kinds of measurements you would like to take.
- Agencies and grant numbers affiliated with your research.
During the training session, we will review how the instrument works and discuss what you need to do in preparation for instrument use.
We will then get you on the schedule for instrument time.
Schedule for Use
Instrument time will be allocated in weekly blocks, as shown below. After using the instrument, you will have to wait 1 month before scheduling again, unless there is no one else in the queue.
